AI Search Is Here: What ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Claude Mean for Small Businesses

Search has become fragmented. It doesn’t just mean Google anymore. For years, “search” and “SEO” implied creating visibility on search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.

That’s no longer the whole story. People are asking ChatGPT for recommendations. They’re using Claude to research before making a decision. They’re reading Google’s AI Overviews.

If you’ve been wondering whether this actually matters for your small business, I want to share a story that changed how one of my clients thought about it.

What AI Search for Small Business Actually Looks Like

A few weeks ago, I was meeting with the owner of an art gallery. We’d been talking about expanding the copy on a few of their main pages to tell their story in more depth.

They’d been investing in blogging for years and had a strong foundation. But some of the core pages on their site were thin, and I’d been encouraging them to revisit these pages to build more visibility on ChatGPT and in AI search.

Honestly, they weren’t convinced AI search applied to them. It felt abstract and not local. A gallery is a relationship business: people walk in the door, they talk to someone, and they fall in love with a piece. What does ChatGPT have to do with that?

Then, just before our meeting, a new client walked into the gallery. He mentioned, almost in passing, that he’d found them through ChatGPT. Not by searching “best art gallery near me”. He’d asked something far more specific, describing the type of art he collects and the kind of gallery experience he was looking for. ChatGPT pointed him to this gallery by name.

He wasn’t a casual browser. He was a highly qualified collector, already familiar with what they offered, before he ever walked through the door.

How Customers Are Finding Small Businesses Now

That gallery story isn’t an outlier. It’s becoming the norm. When someone uses ChatGPT, Claude, or Google’s AI Overviews, they’re not typing in three or four keywords and scrolling through a list of links. They’re describing who they are and what they actually want, often in detail. The kind of art they collect. The type of contractor they trust. The vibe of the restaurant they’re looking for. AI tools are built to handle that kind of specificity.

And instead of returning ten blue links for the person to sort through, these tools do something different. They recommend. They name a business, the way a knowledgeable friend would.

That’s a meaningful shift. A traditional search result asks the customer to do the work of comparing. An AI search result has often already done some of that work for them. For a small business, that’s an enormous opportunity. You’re not just one link among ten. You’re the recommendation.

What AI Search Means for Your Small Business

For most small businesses, now is a good time to invest in building your visibility across Google, Yahoo, Bing, and AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude. Unfortunately, the marketing industry makes this unnecessarily confusing with acronyms such as SEO, GEO, and AEO. Here’s the quick breakdown:

  • SEO — Search Engine Optimization, or getting found on Google, Yahoo, and Bing
  • GEO — Generative Engine Optimization, or getting found on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude
  • AEO — Answer Engine Optimization, or getting cited in answers on these tools

The good news is that this isn’t multiple campaigns. It’s one unified strategy rooted in real-world marketing.

It starts with your website. Does it clearly explain who you are, what you offer, and who you serve? Do you share your expertise through a blog? Do you showcase the real people behind the business to build trust?

Then it extends to the signals beyond your website: reviews that describe specific experiences, mentions from credible sources, and consistent information about your business wherever it appears online. These are the same fundamentals that have always mattered for SEO. AI search just raises the stakes on doing them well.
